Penzance

Penzance

Penzance – a 00 gauge layout
The station at Penzance was opened in 1852 as the terminus of a line from Redruth. The very small station remained until 1879 when the present buildings were constructed by the GWR.
In 1937 the number of platforms for passengers, parcels and mail were increased and the goods yard and motive power depot were relocated away from the station area.
This configuration remained in place until the 1980s when the parcels facility and sidings were removed.
Our layout, with some modification, represents the station as it would have operated in the 1950s and 1960s.
The layout consists of 5 scenic boards each 1.2m long and a 2.4m long fiddle yard giving a total length of 8.4m.
The track is Peco Code 75 with live frog pointwork which includes single and double slips and a scissors crossover
Operation is from a central control panel using 12v dc analogue and two walkabout controllers.
Point tiebar servo motors are operated from the control panel via MERG servo controllers
Copies of the original construction drawings for the station were obtained and as a result it has been possible to construct an accurate model of the station buildings.
Models of the signal box, welfare and admin buildings have been constructed using drawings based on publicly accessible photos.
Using available publications, we have prepared an operating sequence which, in addition to passenger services, includes parcels trains, empty stock movements and light engine workings.
Locomotives and rolling stock provided by club members will mainly consist of ex GWR Hall, Grange & Manor class locos and over thirty coaches & parcels vans.
