North Waltham Junction
There really is a place called North Waltham Junction, this was part of the inspiration for the layout.
North Waltham Junction.
Part of an original planned extension from the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway diverging south of Whitchurch and heading through North Waltham and continuing south east to Alton to complete a route heading north west.
At the time of the layout (1950s) the route to Alton is closed no longer in use but traffic is coming from the north being of Great Western and Southern Stock, from late steam into early diesel.
Standing on the platform, to your left are what remains of the old level crossing and what would have been beyond to Alton and the heart or watercress country. To your right is the line north into the tunnel and all points north.
You might see see Prairie's with B set stock as well as the occasional auto coach countered by southern M7 push pull set or the rare site of something bigger and a three coach bullied set and then the dawn of the diesel in it’s green livery. It all depends on what the operating members of the day have brought with them all stock being owned by them.
Goods traffic is varied with cress being a local speciality, milk traffic from the farms in the area. Wagons are shuffled in and out of the industrial sidings there is always something to see unless it's time for tea.
The Layout.
The layout uses off the shelf Peco products Code 75 (the fine scale) for track and standard Peco point motors and accessory switches take care of point operation.
The control panel (conventional DC operation) allows each section to be switched between two controllers two trains at once can run, one to and from the station and another running in the goods yard.
The hardware, boards for the layout are 3ft x 18" inches and there are five in total giving us a run of 15ft in total. Two people can operate at once while a third person is on hand to moves things around in the fiddle yard. The theme of the layout is typically southern with inspiration drawn from the restored station at Swanage.
A joint Western and Southern layout currently under construction but in the final stages of scenery - as of August 2022.
